A new wave of bad weather is expected to hit Albania in the first days of October with significant drops in temperature, intense rainfall and storms.
The news was announced by renowned Greek meteorologist and Pasok MEP Sakis Arnaoutoglou, who often warns about dangerous weather phenomena affecting our country.
According to him, Thursday, October 2, will bring heavy rain and snow in many areas of Albania.
Specifically, in the north of the country, from Shkodra to Kukës and Peshkopi, very heavy rainfall is expected, while above 900-1000 meters of altitude there will be heavy snowfall with considerable layering. In central areas, such as Dibra, Burreli and Elbasan, rainfall will also be abundant, while in the Korab and Shebenik mountains the snow will start above 1000 meters, with intensity at higher altitudes, the Greek meteorologist emphasizes.
Also in the southeast, in Gramsh, Korça and around the Morava and Gramoz mountains, heavy rainfall and snowfall are expected above 1200 meters. While in the south, in Gjirokastër, Tepelena and Përmet, there will be mainly rainfall, while snowfall is not excluded in areas above 1200–1300 meters.
The situation is different on the western coast, from Tirana and Durrës to Vlora, where rainfall will be scarce and weak, and in some areas it may even be absent altogether.
The bad weather will cause problems for vehicle movement on several mountain roads. Chains will be needed on the Shkodër-Kukës road, on the Burrel-Peshkopi mountain segment above 900–1000 meters, on the Elbasan-Librazhd road towards the border with North Macedonia above 1000 meters, as well as on several mountain passes towards Korça and around Gjirokastra and Përmet above 1300–1400 meters.
Winds will blow on Thursday evening along the coastline from Vlora to Shkodra, at speeds of 60–80 km/h, corresponding to force 8 on the Beaufort scale, while inland the wind is not expected to exceed force 5–6 Beaufort./ TCH
