Minister of Defense, Ermal Nufi, in an interview with Euronews Albania, spoke about the selection of Tirana as the host of the next NATO summit. During his speech, he stated that the summit will be held within 2027 or early 2028, but emphasized that this is determined by what the country's leaders will decide.
According to the Minister of Defense, the alliance operates with concrete milestones defined in the long-term plan. If the first allocations are declared in 2035 and in Ankara, the Albanian summit will have a strictly operational role.
Beyond the technical side, Nufi underlined that the choice of Tirana carries a strong political and strategic message for all actors who share common values or goals with the alliance.
"I have done work on my desk for the Ankara summit and we need to understand how the alliance works. The alliance has ministerial meetings that are for defense ministers, there are ministerial meetings that are for foreign ministers who continue to demonstrate political will, and there are summits that are for heads of state.
And at every summit, the alliance commits itself in concrete terms. At the Hague Summit, we committed to spending 5% on defense by 2035. It will create what was called a credible path where each country will declare how it will spend in relation to annual spending in the state budget.
And at the Ankara Summit, there was a summit where the heads of state declared what had happened specifically. I can say without going into details, there are states that have over 5%, over 6% already committed this year. What we can say is that the summit will be the first to address these expenses that we have not allocated.
So, in The Hague we gave our word that we would allocate the expenses, in Ankara they declared that the expenses had been allocated, at the summit they will do what they will do in Tirana, the summit will be when they will discuss specifically where we are with the concrete execution of this money, where we are with the concrete systems, where we are with their deployment.
And normally, to make these expenditures, to make these procurements, to get them into this system, it could take more than 12 months, it could take 18 months, it could take 24 months. And it's for the NATO leaders to decide when the next summit will be.
"It's a situation that is evolving in such a way. It's a security that is worrying for security in Europe," he said, among other things.
