One of the most important archaeological discoveries of recent years in Albania is the unearthing of the ruins of an ancient city near Bushati in Shkodër.
Polish and Albanian archaeologists have been excavating for several years, managing to discover important parts of the ancient Illyrian city, which is believed to be "Bassania", a city mentioned in antiquity but whose location has always been a mystery.
But the wonders of our southern neighbors seem to have no end. A very popular Greek media in the English language, but also known for its extremist attitudes towards Albanians, "Greek Reporter", claims that the city is of Greek origin.
"Some features of the ancient city suggest a Greek connection. The settlement's defenses are typical Hellenistic. Archaeologists found a gate surrounded by two large bastions and the walls of the city would have been more than three meters wide," writes the Greek media.
The Greek newspaper goes even further by calling ancient Lezha, Lissios, a Greek city.
“According to the ancient Greek historian Diodorus, nearby Lissos was founded by Dionysus of Syracuse in 385 BC. Syracuse was an ancient Greek city in Sicily. Dionysus is said to have founded the city as part of a strategy to secure Syracuse's trade across the Adriatic Sea," writes this Greek newspaper.
The ancient city of Bassania is mainly known to modern historians through the writings of the Roman historian Livy. It describes how, in 168 BC, the Illyrian king Gentis besieged Bassania during the Third Illyrian War.
