The figures with which the diabetes disease is increasing and the complications it causes require a national plan to prevent not only diabetes but also the complications it causes, which range from loss of sight to the loss of a limb.

Diabetes leads to the blindness of 1000 patients every year, while quite a few lose a leg, as the diabetic foot is one of the important complications in these patients.

"In 2005 there were 30 thousand patients, today we are 86 thousand, almost three times the number of people with diabetes. There is a slight increase in blindness and diabetic foot", says Florian Toti, endocrinologist.

The multiplication of the number of patients with diabetes is related to the foods that Albanians are consuming today, where most of the products are stimulated with hormones, starting from meat, dairy products that contain milk powder and starch, up to fruits and vegetables.

But doctors say that the lack of physical activity is also one of the main causes, since Albanians use the car even for short distances.

Therefore, prevention is immediately required from childhood. The disease of diabetes is one of the most costly both for the family that has a member with diabetes, but also for society./ TCH
