The Durrës prosecutor's office seized today 102 containers with nearly 2,100 tons of waste suspected as poisonous dust from the chimneys of metallurgical factories, which returned to the largest port of Albania on Monday morning with the ship Moliva from Italy.

The containers left Durrës on July 4 for Thailand, which rejected the cargo after the alarm given by the non-governmental organization " Basel Action Network BAN " that it contained dangerous toxic waste from metallurgical processes.

The prosecution ordered the Port Authority, the Captaincy, the Customs, the Border Directorate, the Police and the Customs Investigation to seize as material evidence "the containers, which were transported according to the customs declaration R27224 on July 4 of this year with the exporter Sokolaj sh.pk and the recipient GS Minerals Doo", for the investigations started two months ago "in order to carry out relevant expertise".

The two prosecutors Suela Beluli and Mediana Meta detailed in their order that the seizure was carried out based on the proceedings on the relevant articles of the Criminal Code under the suspicion of "smuggling of prohibited or restricted goods", "air pollution through the release of fumes, gases and other radioactive toxic substances, as well as "abuse of duties of the public functionary".

The prosecution asked the authorities that the seized containers should not be opened, but deposited in a safe place from an environmental and physical point of view and monitored by cameras without interruption.

The suspicions are that the Sokolaj company did not declare the metallurgical powders as "hazardous waste" and unloaded them in an open environment in the port of Durrës to then export them abroad.

BAN has doubts that such transports are carried out periodically from this port.

The Albanian authorities have expressed the need for " the realization of exhaustive analyzes and reliable and verifiable legal evidence ".

While BAN called on Albania for transparency a week ago, opening "containers publicly and in the presence of independent groups like BAN and to share the samples, which can be analyzed in parallel in different laboratories".

BAN has also expressed its willingness to stay in Durrës to support the Albanian government in the control and handling of containers.

In addition to the Durrës prosecutor's office, the European Union Anti-Fraud office, OLAF, is also conducting investigations./ VOA
