Albanian researcher and writer Lea Ypi has told her personal story of how the British authorities stopped her family from getting a visa to go to England to meet her.

Ypi says that she has been living in England for 14 years, but that her brother has never visited her since he was refused a visa. She also says that even her 70-year-old mother could not go to Britain when Lea was pregnant and needed her, as she was also refused a visa.

Full reaction:

The idea of unauthorized "Albanian men" (is this a new human species?) coming to Britain and very "easily" getting a visa is a joke. I have been in Britain for 14 years and my brother has never visited me, never. He doesn't know where I live, he has never seen my children at school.

When he applied for the visa, it was rejected. The authorities were not satisfied with the fact that his ties to Albania were "strong enough". Spent hundreds of pounds paying for visas (even went on English courses). He never applied again because he is clear (like all of us) that if you are a "young Albanian male" it is certain that you will be rejected. I wonder how much money the UK makes each year from refusing visa applications?

When my son was born, I had a difficult labor that forced me to stay in bed for weeks. I needed help. My mother could not visit me. Because his visa was cancelled.

It had been in the UK before but I myself made a mistake that I mentioned the fact that I was pregnant in the invitation letter and the answer was that my mother "a 70-year-old Albanian woman" had not satisfied the consular office that her intentions were that of a visitor genuine". Ask any Albanian you meet and they will all have a similar story. They may even have many of them.
