The head of the Competition Authority, Denar Biba, was present today at the Economy Commission, where he made an annual summary of the authority's activity for 2022.
Biba stated that the Competition Authority does not aim to impose fines, but when there is a violation, the authority has the duty to impose penalties.
While answering the questions of the members of the Commission, Biba stated that an investigation was conducted regarding the fuels, which resulted in no findings, while regarding the prices, he stated that they are not the highest in the region.
"I do not perceive the authority as a finer whose sole aim is to impose fines. There are some companies whose annual turnover is high, but their profit may be low.
It is up to you to make such connections so that they are taxed where known. The Competition Authority has given a tangential opinion as far as we assessed in that decision-making, that the boards of this character come in opposition to the right of competition, but case by case, no further than yesterday the government of Great Britain has started the discussion with the supermarkets to set a voluntary ceiling price.
Greece also has it voluntarily, but it has imposed a kind of penalty in case they go over a certain amount of taxation, which will be tripled by the state. Boards have existed in the history of every world economy, in crisis situations there have been boards.
Prices related to fuel and telephone are not the highest in the region. Regarding the fuels, we launched an investigation that resulted in no findings. In terms of the law, the legislation enables the competition authority to enter as an observer and then as a punisher of these certain areas" - said the chairman of the Competition Authority Denar Biba.
