Adulvehap Ejupi, editor at TRT World in Turkey, has given more details after the earthquake that hit the country on Monday morning. Ejupi told the show "Opinion" that the area where the earthquake struck is a seismic center, but also a geopolitical one. More than 90 US nuclear warheads are located there as part of NATO.
"We have to take into account that that area, in addition to being the least developed area, is the area of large military centers not only of Turkey, but also of NATO. Over 90 US nuclear warheads are located in that area within NATO. It is not only a seismic center, but also a geopolitical one, which has significant capacity. It is the area with less investment. It is there where the Syrian war continues, but the US and NATO offensives are constantly taking place", said Ejupi.
The journalist said that in total there are 11 areas affected by the earthquake. He emphasized that the weather is also a problem at this time.
"In addition to the heavy snow and heavy rain, the strong wind is also such that, together with the earthquake, it really constitutes an extraordinary difficulty and constitutes an apocalyptic scene."
According to Eyup, so far there are 2,416 victims in Turkey alone and 1,300 in Northern Syria.
"The number of injured is over 13 thousand, and tens of thousands remain inside the ruins", he said.
According to the editor of TRT World, Turkey has the capacities to cope with such situations, but the earthquake is of such magnitude that more than 12 million inhabitants have been affected.
"That area, the 11 provinces affected by the earthquake, has approximately 12 million inhabitants and it is extremely difficult to get everyone under control. That everyone has at least 1 member under the ruins, or has family members, friends or companions and makes the situation even more chaotic and difficult", he said.
