Former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu , after leaving the GJKKO where the hearing on the Gërdeci file took place, stated that it is alleged that he, while holding the post, has increased the calibers of ammunition.

But, Mediu emphasized that, according to experts, there is no legal act that defines who are large calibers and who are small calibers.

The former minister added that the orders were signed by the Chief of the General Staff and the most specialized structures dealing with the issue of armaments and ammunition.

"I did not study military service, I was appointed in 2005 as Minister to implement NATO standards, and one of them was the dismantling of excess ammunition that posed a danger to Albanian society," he declared.

Fatmir Mediu: The people's courts would be very envious of today's session, it is not serious, but absurd to the point of ridiculous.

They claim that the minister has increased the calibers of ammunition, while experts clearly state that there is no legal act that defines what constitutes large and small calibers.  When the prosecutor was asked by me what constitutes large and small caliber according to his definition, he said he did not know because I am a lawyer.

The signed orders are from the Chief of General Staff, from the most specialized structures that deal with the issue of armaments and ammunition, but more than that they refer to a Russian book, or military books from '85. I have not studied the army, I have not been appointed as Minister of Defense under the Warsaw Pact, or even of the Socialist People's Army. I was appointed in 2005 as Minister to implement NATO standards and one of them was the dismantling of excess ammunition that posed a danger to Albanian society.

Even worse than that, when I presented to the experts and prosecutors documents from the Minister of Defense and the Chief of General Staff when I had not yet taken office, when the agreement with the US for the dismantling of ammunition was specified in these orders, ammunition up to 120 mm, this refutes the absurdity of their position.

The Armed Forces knew what they were doing and our allies, when they signed these agreements, did so in accordance with Albanian laws.
