An Albanian girl has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison by a UK court for her role in the trafficking of illegal migrants into the country.

Ujeza Kurmekaj, known as the "intermediary", was arrested in Banbury, Oxfordshire, in October last year.

The 32-year-old was part of a network trafficking to Britain not only Albanian citizens, but also migrants from countries like Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The NCA found hundreds of messages on their phones directing illegal migrants to go to, paying the money and where they should be heading for boats across the French Channel.

Andy MacGill, senior investigating officer at the National Crime Agency, said: "Ujeza Kurmekaj played a major role as a middleman, connecting migrants with people smugglers who could transport them on dangerous journeys across the Channel. "This is why she would update payments of hundreds of euros per person."

"Kurmekaj had little interest in the safety of the people she was arranging crossings for, only that she and her employers were receiving payments. "Disuniting and dismantling the organised crime groups responsible for people smuggling is a priority for the NCA and we will continue to target the offenders involved in every step of the journey," he said.
