Debora, a tourist from the United States of America, escaped the tragic accident on the Tirana-Durres highway, which killed the 36-year-old driver and injured 12 others. In a statement to the media, she recounts the terrifying moments of the accident when the vehicle began to overturn and the passengers began to scream. She says that everything happened within a few seconds and that the bleeding people were screaming.
Debora, who is in Albania on vacation, said she was headed to Tirana, as she would return to the US the next day. After the accident, the tourist says that local residents and other drivers immediately came to the aid of the injured, appreciating the solidarity of Albanians.
When asked by reporters about the driver, who is suspected of having suffered a heart attack, the tourist said that the bus was "moving a little unsteadily." She and a tourist from Colombia escaped without serious injuries, while she emphasizes that the passengers who were sitting on the left side, where the metal road barrier had also penetrated, suffered serious injuries.
The tourist's testimony
Tourist: I was looking down and then I looked up. I felt the bus coming off the road. When I looked up, everything happened in a matter of seconds. Suddenly the bus flipped over on its side and people started screaming. Blood was dripping from me because I was on the lower side.
First I checked if I was okay, then I got out. Another person was getting out behind me and we got out of the back of the bus. People were bleeding, screaming. Immediately people from the nearby building came to help. Cars stopped too. Albanians are wonderful people, they brought me water. That was all. I was very, very lucky. Thank God...
Journalist: Are you the only one not in the hospital?
Tourist: Yes. There was also a guy from Colombia, in South America, and I'm from the United States. I don't know about the others, but I believe I will... I managed to get all my belongings, everything. This picture survived the accident too. It was incredible. Who would have thought?
Journalist: What was your destination?
Tourist: Tomorrow I'm going back to the US. I'm flying from here to London and then from London to America.
Journalist: Do you have any problems?
Tourist: No.
Journalist: Are you okay?
Tourist: Yes.
Journalist: Okay.
Tourist: It seems to me that...
Journalist: What about that wound?
Tourist: It's old. I didn't get a good look at your face. I wiped it off a little, but there was blood on my feet, even though it wasn't my blood. I can't wait to go to my room and take a shower.
Journalist: How was the bus driver?
Tourist: I don't know. It was moving a little unsteadily the whole way. I thought maybe it was normal for the bus, but I don't know.
Journalist: Was there air conditioning?
Tourist: Yes. But he had opened the top a little to let air in.
Journalist: Which side were you sitting on?
Tourist: I was sitting on the right side, in the second seat. It seemed to me that the people who were most seriously injured were on the left side of the bus. The young man from Colombia was also on the right side. The driver lost his life. Those who were on the left side seemed to have suffered serious injuries.
Journalist: How was your experience in Albania?
Tourist: Up until this point it was wonderful. Albania is a wonderful country. I really liked it. Unfortunately, this accident is what will remain in my memory. But it was no one's fault. It was just one of those things that happen.
