Eurostat: Albania, champion of depopulation in the Western Balkans

Albania is the country with the largest population reduction in the Western Balkans compared to the population the countries had in the early 1990s.

According to a Eurostat report, the population in Albania has reduced by 15 percent, falling to about 2.8 mln from the 3.3 mln that began after the fall of communism.

The second largest country with the largest population decline has Serbia with 11 percent, Kosovo with 10.2 percent, North Macedonia at 3 percent and Montenegro with 2.4 percent.

The main factor of depopulation in Albania is emigration, while in Kosovo among the factors is war. In Serbia, the main factor is the continuing wars during the 1990s, which began with Croatia, continued with Bosnia and closed with Kosovo.

High population decline Eurostat also reports for Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania. The outlet is that the strong decline in these countries began after membership of the European Union, where many citizens emigrated to the EU's most developed Western countries.
