Franc Gergely Çopja, along with eight others, appeared today before the Brussels Assize Court, where they will be tried for the murder of Ardit Spahiu, who was shot dead in broad daylight in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek.
"I am Albanian and a real estate agent," said Çopja.
Belgian media " Le Soir " writes: A silence prevails in the hall. The name "Chopja" is known far beyond these walls. He belongs to a clan led by two brothers, who in 2020 alone imported more than 28 tons of cocaine to Europe from Latin America.
Today, Franc Gergely is being tried as the main mastermind behind the murder of Ardit Spahiu, while his accomplice, Mikael Qosja, is still at large. At the time of the events, both were living in Dubai, using multiple identities to manage their activities away from the attention of the authorities. Their clan had invested massively in real estate in Tirana and Elbasan, buying apartments, buildings, bars and restaurants, with the aim of laundering money and presenting themselves as indispensable investors for regional development.
The President of the Brussels Serious Crimes Court, Isabelle De Saedeleer, has decided: neither to separate the case nor to postpone the process.
The trial will proceed as planned. There are nine people on trial for one of Belgium's first drug-related murders of international proportions, but only five of them are physically present in the dock, in the large "Justitia" courtroom in Brussels.
Endrit Sadedini is absent. “It is completely impossible for my client to be present in Brussels, as he has been detained in Albania since February 19,” lawyer Michel Bouchat told the court. He requested that his client’s file be separated from the others and examined later, citing force majeure. Several other lawyers also requested a postponement of the trial, arguing that his presence is essential to guaranteeing the rights of the defense. After several hours of discussion, the president of the court announced that the request for separation was rejected, as was the request for a postponement of the trial. The trial will continue as planned.
Endrit Sadedini was sentenced on December 2 by a first instance court in Albania to three years and four months in prison for possession of a firearm.
In Belgium, the federal prosecution suspects him as one of the three perpetrators of this murder that has attracted great attention.
Spahiu was shot in an assassination attempt on November 27, 2020, while he was a passenger in a vehicle. He initially managed to flee, but was pursued on foot by two masked men, who executed him. The investigation into Spahiu's murder gained momentum after the decryption of the SKY ECC platform. Nine suspects were eventually identified, including Franc Gergelyn, a key figure in the Çopja clan.
According to federal police, he and his brothers operated from Dubai and were involved in cocaine trafficking between South America and Europe.
Ardit Spahiu was no stranger to the underworld. He was involved in drug trafficking and in 2010 was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a murder in his hometown of Elbasan. Spahiu belonged to the Alibej clan, which had been in conflict with the rival Çopja clan for years.
After the theft of 49 kilograms of cocaine from a Çopja clan apartment in London, violence between the two criminal groups escalated.
The file is filled with contract killings carried out by both sides. The murder of Ardit Spahiu, who fled to Belgium in 2019 fearing for his life, is considered a continuation of the conflict between these two clans.
Franc Çopja is the first drug criminal to be extradited from the United Arab Emirates to Belgium. He has been in custody in Belgium since late 2023 and is suspected of ordering the murder of Ardit Spahiu.
The jury for the trial was selected on Monday. Today, the trial officially began with the reading of the indictment, which consists of a full 204 pages.
