The former mayor of Tirana, Tomor Malasi, passed away yesterday at the age of 87.
Malasi was an important politician of the Democratic Party in the early days of its creation.
He was appointed mayor of Tirana after the general elections of 1991 by the Democratic Party, a post he held for one year.
After the overthrow of the communist dictatorship in December 1990, the first pluralist elections were held on March 31, 1991. The first pluralist assembly that emerged from these elections decided in September of the same year that the mayor of the city be appointed from the party that had won the majority of deputies' mandates in each city. The Democratic Party won most of the mandates of deputies in the main cities of Albania. Tirana was the city where PD achieved the deepest victory in these elections.
Based on the decision of the Assembly of Albania, the mayor of Tirana was appointed by PD, Mr. Tomor Malasi.
In 1992, when the general elections were held again, Malasi left the Municipality to take the mandate of deputy, until 1996.
During these four years, he was also the deputy speaker of the Assembly where the majority belonged to the Democratic Party.
After the 1996 elections, Malasi aligned himself with the group of deputies and senior officials of the DP who demanded that this political force and former President Berisha be held responsible for the usury that caused the riots of 1997.
The family of Tomor Malasi has announced that the funeral ceremony will take place today at 13:00.
