A couple from Basel is known to have hired a 20-year-old nanny from Albania, who they used as a slave. The case is now being heard at the Basel Criminal Court.

As stated in the indictment of the public prosecution, the young woman received only 300 francs per month. She slept in the children's room in a "closet bed". When she complained about the payment, the couple also took her passport.

For the little money she earned, she had to clean the family's four-room apartment, take care of the three children aged two, five and nine, cook for the family and do the laundry. Even, in cases where her employers were not satisfied, she was, according to the accusation, even beaten.

Now the couple is accused of human trafficking, coercion and violation of the law on foreigners and integration, writes baslerzeitung.ch. At the beginning of the main hearing held on Friday, both denied the charges.

"The young Albanian woman has spread lies and has even hit their children," the 38-year-old head of the house claimed in court.

They had only wished to save the young woman from the severe economic conditions. This 20-year-old was previously employed in Aargau, where she was also treated badly.

But, as emerged from the process, the Basel couple is said to have hired nannies before, under similar discriminatory circumstances. In this process, it is learned that there were attempts to pressure the victim, now 23 years old, so that she withdraws her statements. The victim now lives in a secret location.

The agency from Albania mediates nannies in Switzerland

The young woman, now a victim, had to leave high school in Albania to help in her parents' business.

She had obtained the job of nanny through an agency which claimed that work for up to three months was legal in Switzerland. But this is not true. A permit is required for the employment of Albanian citizens in Switzerland.

However, the circumstances show that Albanian nannies are being systematically exploited in Switzerland.

The public prosecution will file the criminal charges as part of the plea. Because the case is being heard by a three-judge panel, a prison sentence of up to five years can be expected. The decision will be made next week.
