President-elect Donald Trump said Wednesday evening that he plans to nominate former television host and Arizona Republican Kari Lake to the position of director of the US government-funded Voice of America.
Mr. Trump announced his choice in a post on the platform, " Truth Social ."
Ms. Lake is a close political ally of the president-elect and a former anchor of a Fox News television affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona.
She worked in journalism for 27 years before leaving the profession in 2021 to run for governor of Arizona. In a 2024 Senate race that she lost, Ms. Lake said Arizona should be a “model for pursuing (Mr. Trump’s) ‘America First’ policies.”
In his post, President-elect Trump hinted that he will soon announce his choice for the head of the US Agency for Global Media.
"I am pleased to announce that Kari Lake will serve as the next Director of Voice of America. She will be appointed by and will work closely with the next head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, whom I will announce soon," the President-elect said in his post.
This agency (USAGM) oversees the Voice of America along with other U.S.-funded broadcasting entities. The CEO of USAGM is appointed by the president and requires Senate confirmation.
The CEO of the publicly funded USAGM ensures that its entities fulfill their missions for credible and accurate journalism in countries where media freedom is limited.
The current director of the Voice of America, Mike Abramowitz, sent an email to staff on Thursday morning saying that he saw the announcement about Ms. Lake on Wednesday evening and that he had not been given any information other than the social media post.
"I look forward to an orderly transition of power for both USAGM and Voice of America. I will cooperate with the new administration and follow the process," he said.
A 2020 law restructured the management of the Agency
The USAGM chief executive has the authority to appoint or dismiss network executives, but under a bipartisan bill passed in December 2020, changes at the top of the networks require a majority vote of the International Broadcasting Advisory Board.
The Board consists of six members appointed by the President, whose terms begin and end at different times, plus the Secretary of State. The Board's function is to advise the Chief Executive to ensure that he or she respects the editorial independence and integrity of the broadcasting entities and that the highest standards of journalism are upheld.
Ms. Lake herself said on Platform X that she feels "honored that President Trump has asked me to lead Voice of America."
She said that Voice of America "is a vital international media outlet" that promotes "democracy and truth."
"Under my leadership, Voice of America will excel in its mission: reflecting America's achievements around the world," she said.
VOA attempted to contact Ms. Lake for comment through the media relations section of her campaign website, but had not received a response by the time of publication of this article.
Voice of America has a weekly audience of 354 million people and broadcasts in 49 languages.
Its current director, Abramowitz, is a former president of the Freedom House organization and was a journalist and editor of The Washington Post for 24 years.
