The US State Department has issued a new warning for Americans visiting a European destination that continues to grow in popularity among foreign tourists.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Embassy in Tirana, Albania, encouraged American citizens to “exercise heightened vigilance” when visiting the capital. The April 1 security alert specifically mentioned that “Iranian-affiliated groups may target U.S.-affiliated entities or Iranian opposition elements in Albania.”

The warning adds that these groups "may also target common places, such as tourist areas, shopping malls, hotels, clubs and restaurants."

The State Department recommends that Americans remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, monitor local media, and keep their cell phones charged in case of an emergency.

Albania is currently categorized under a Level 2 travel advisory by the State Department. This designation recommends travelers “exercise increased caution.” The advisory, last updated on December 31, 2024, cites crime as the main cause for concern.

Despite the warnings, Albanian authorities emphasize that "there is no concrete information regarding a real threat to security," according to a press release from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

After communicating with anti-terrorism structures, the Department of Public Security and the Criminal Police — which are in contact with the US Embassy Security Office — the Minister of Internal Affairs, Besfort Lamallari, confirmed that "there is no concrete information, not even intelligence, about a truly dangerous situation."

He added in the April 2 announcement: “The fact is that Albania remains a safe country for Albanian citizens and for all those who visit it.”

The total number of foreign tourists visiting Albania in 2025 reached 12.47 million, marking an increase of about 6.6% compared to 2024, according to data reviewed by Albanian Daily News. About 71.5% of these tourists came from Southern Europe.

Travel + Leisure reports that Albania is known for its deep blue waters. Tourists often enjoy kayaking, rafting, and scuba diving on the country's beaches. Meanwhile, nearly three-quarters of the territory is made up of mountains and hills.

Those planning to travel to Albania are encouraged by the State Department to enroll in the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides email updates and notifications from U.S. embassies and consulates abroad. (People )
