The Albanian-American Development Fund (AADF) has reacted over debates for butrin National Park, which under an agreement will be managed co-owned by the Albanian government.
The AADF in a press release says it has been active in Butrint since 2009 and has contributed $1.2 mln to its management so far.
Also in the next phase will contribute $5 ml by turning the Park of Butrint into a stable development model.
"AADF has been active in Butrint National Park since 2009. Our goal is to support the preservation, promotion and management of Butrint as the most important area of Albanian heritage.
In co-operation with the Government of Albania, Albanian institutions and international and local experts, the Foundation has brought to Butrint one of the most successful models of cultural heritage. AADF has contributed $1.2 million to the installation of cameras, tourist infrastructure and signage, environmental rehabilitation of the new road, electronic ticketing systems and the development of the Integrated Management Plan. Thanks to these interventions the site has had revenue growth, more transparency, less corruption and a higher quality of services.
The second phase of AADF's commitment to Butrint is aimed at protecting and maintaining the area for the long term. The AADF supported the Integrated Management Plan (MIP), which was handed over for consultation to the World Heritage Centre (UNESCO). The LDC was reviewed by UNESCO's consultative bodies, ICOMOS and ICCROM, and approved by the Government of Albania.
Ownership and ultimate control over Butrint, as in all objects of Albania's cultural heritage, remains unchanged. The plan provides an architecture to protect the park, promote transparency and guarantees that the proceeds are used to develop the area in accordance with the standards of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After the approval of the PUN by the Government of Albania, the AADF will contribute another $5m, so that the National Park of Butrint is known: "... as a sustainable management model for sites with cultural and natural elements, bringing it back to the centre for the region and offering visitors a unique experience, engaging local communities and financial institutions and also serving as a model for other parks in Albania."
The Butrint project is an important example of how AADF serves as a catalyst, providing funds and knowledge to improve the quality of life and services of Albanian citizens by maximising transparency and reduction of corruption, while introducing some of the most advanced models of management and expertise in the world"-said in the press release.
In public space there have been various voices who have opposed the government's chosen form for park management.
Even a few days ago between Culture Minister Elva Margariti and PD MP Ina Zhupa there was a clash of harsh tones in the Parliamentary Committee.
