The State Police announced this Friday that the much-wanted Jani Alia, 47, has been arrested in Athens.

The operation to capture him was codenamed "In Time" and was carried out in cooperation with the Greek police.

"The Criminal Police Department, after investigative work and information provision, identified the location of Jani Alia, who was hiding in Athens. Thanks to the close cooperation and exchange of information between the State Police and the Greek authorities, the Greek Police finalized the "IN TIME" operation, arresting this citizen," the police announced.

Currently, Interpol Tirana, in coordination with its counterparts in Athens, is continuing the procedures for his extradition to Albania.

Who is Jani Alia?

Jani Alia is one of the most wanted men in Albanian justice. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia for the murder of Elton Çiço. This event occurred on May 1, 2016 in a bar near the "Emin Duraku" school.

Alia is from Tepelena and executed 36-year-old Çiço with two bullets while he was sitting in a bar. The cause of the murder is suspected to be the enmity between Jani Alia and Elton Çiço, which started in Greece, when the two characters were in prison, the former on murder charges and Çiço on drug charges.

For this event, Alia was assisted by Renato Milloshi, 36, the son of former communist leader Hysni Milloshi.

In 2022, Jani Ali's name was among the 5 most wanted names by Albanian authorities.

A year later, the Special Court decided to confiscate his assets as they are not justified by the legal income declared by the family members and are suspected of stemming from Ali's criminal activity.
