A special Zinedine Zidane jersey was among the historic items up for auction in Paris at an event organized by Maison Millon. The item has acquired iconic status for a very interesting reason: it is the jersey that Zidane was supposed to have worn in the 1998 World Cup final, but which was never actually worn by him. Despite this, the jersey sold for 52,000 euros.
Why didn't Zidane wear this shirt in the World Cup final?
A considerable sum for a football shirt, which attracted the interest of many collectors. The blue shirt with white and red details was authenticated by expert Jean-Marc Leynet, who also explained its curious history.
Zidane was the absolute protagonist of the 1998 World Cup final, where he scored two goals in France's 3-0 victory over Brazil. He had three shirts at his disposal for that historic match. Leynet explains: "This is not the shirt he wore during the match. Zidane used two shirts: one in the first half and another in the second half. This is one of the extra shirts he had at his disposal for the final."
However, during the match there was no incident or reason to change the jersey again, so it remained unused and today is a prized item for collectors.
Zidane's jersey sets record at auction
A total of 200 items were sold at the auction, but Zidane's jersey was the highest-paid at 52,000 euros. Alongside it, several other historic jerseys were also sold, including:
- Michel Platini's jersey from the 1985 Intercontinental Cup final against Uruguay: 30 thousand euros
- Kylian Mbappé's jersey from the 2022 World Cup group stage against Denmark: 12 thousand euros
Other legendary jerseys were also on sale, including those of Bixente Lizarazu (France) and Alessandro Nesta (Italy) from the Euro 2000 final, as well as the jerseys of Lilian Thuram, Didier Deschamps and Juric from the 1998 World Cup semi-final between France and Croatia. All proceeds from the auction will go to charity.
