Spanish midfielder Lamine Yamal has reacted angrily to Spain fans' anti-Muslim chants during a friendly match against Egypt in Barcelona.

Spanish fans chanted "Whoever doesn't dance is a Muslim," a phrase that Yamal publicly condemned in an Instagram post. He said: "These chants were directed at the opposing team and not at me personally, but as a Muslim I feel disrespected. Using a religion to mock someone on a pitch shows ignorance and racism."

He adds that football is about enjoying it and supporting the team, not disrespecting people for who they are or what they believe.

The regional Catalan police force, Mossos d'Esquadra, has launched an investigation into the calls, which have been condemned by Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and Justice Minister Félix Bolaños.

Before the match, the Egyptian national anthem was accompanied by jeers and authorities repeatedly urged fans over the public address system to refrain from making offensive comments. An anti-discrimination message was also displayed on screens in the stadium.

Bolanos wrote on social media: "Racist insults and slurs shame our society. Those who remain silent today will be complicit."

While coach De la Fuente added: "I have complete aversion to any xenophobic or racist behavior. They are unacceptable."

Spain was hosting Egypt, a Muslim-majority country, in a match that was originally scheduled to be held in Qatar but was changed due to regional tensions following the Iran war. Spain's World Cup opponents will also include Saudi Arabia.
