Betting scandal deepens in Turkey, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe players arrested!

The betting scandal in Turkey continues to be in the spotlight, as new developments come to light.

The involvement of thousands of footballers and several referees, who have even been suspended, has resulted in intensified investigations.

The Istanbul prosecutor's office officially announced that it had arrested a number of people in connection with the case. Among them, we find the names of two footballers, one from Galatasaray and one from Fenerbahce.

Specifically, they are Metehan Baltaçi (Galata) and Mert Hakan Yanda? (Fenerbahce). The former is accused of betting on a match in which he participated, while the latter is accused of betting through a third party.

27 footballers bet on their own matches

The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office announced that a comprehensive operation was carried out as part of the second phase of the case, known as the "Football Betting Investigations".

Based on the reports of the Economic Crimes Investigation Committee (MASAK), data collected from legal betting sites and disciplinary decisions taken by the Professional Football Disciplinary Committee at its meeting on November 13, 2025, legal proceedings were initiated against 46 suspects.

"A total of 27 footballers, including Galatasaray professional football player Metahan Baltaç, were found to have bet on their team's match. Fenerbahçe professional football player Mert Hakan Yantas was found to have bet on legal betting sites through someone else."

Five people, including Ankaraspor owner Ahmet Oktan, Ankaraspor president Emin Katipoglou, Belediyespor president Sahin Kaya and two coaches, are facing match-fixing charges after they were identified for attempting to influence the outcome of the Ankaraspor-Belediyespor football match held on 28/04/2024.

It was also revealed that there was an agreement to influence the outcome of the Umraniyespor-Giresunspor football match held on 24/12/2023.

Today, at 07:15, 35 suspects were arrested and taken into custody in accordance with the simultaneous arrest, detention, search and seizure order issued by the Istanbul Police Directorate for the criminal offense of “Violation of Law No. 6222 on the Prevention of Violence and Disorder in Sports” against a total of 46 suspects located in Istanbul and 16 other provinces.

5 suspects are abroad. Efforts to arrest the remaining suspects continue.
