China won the first gold medal in swimming and did so by setting a new world record in Paris 2024.

The hero of the Asian country was Pan Zhanle, who triumphed in the 100 meters freestyle race with a time of 46 seconds and 4 tenths, breaking the record he held himself by 4 tenths. However, the Chinese holiday was accompanied by controversy.

Following allegations of doping by the United States, Australia coach Bret Houki cast doubt on the result. According to the technician who has been working in swimming for 30 years, "the speed of the Chinese swimmer is impossible for humans to achieve".

Pan Zhanle's victory came after a controversial event where more than 20 Chinese swimmers have tested positive for doping.

However, VADA lifted the penalties and some of them competed in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. Since that episode, at the Olympics in Paris, Chinese swimmers were among the most controlled.

Pan himself stated that last year he was checked 29 times and never tested positive.
