Liverpool's Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah has called for an end to the "massacres" in Gaza, saying humanitarian aid must be allowed into the besieged Palestinian enclave immediately.

The 31-year-old attacker made his first comments on the deepening Israel-Hamas conflict on Wednesday, amid growing anger over the death of nearly 500 people in an explosion at Arab al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City.

Palestinian authorities say the explosion was caused by an Israeli airstrike. Israel claims on the other hand that the explosion was the result of a rocket fired by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) armed group by misfiring. PIJ has rejected the accusation.

"It is not always easy to speak at a time like this. There was a lot of violence and a lot of heartbreak and brutality," Salah said in a video posted to his 62.7 million Instagram followers.

The footballer, who is Egypt's national team captain, had been criticized for not speaking out in defense of the Palestinians and some critics had launched an online campaign to have him removed on social media.

"The escalation of the last few weeks is unbearable to witness. All lives are sacred and must be protected. The massacres must be stopped, families are being torn apart".

"What is clear now is that humanitarian aid to Gaza must be allowed immediately. The people there are in terrible conditions," added the footballer. "The scenes in the hospital last night were terrifying. The people of Gaza are in urgent need of food, water and medical supplies"

"I am calling on world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls - humanity must prevail."

Winner of the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool, Salah is one of the most popular athletes in the Arab world.
