Shocking confession of Nicolo Fagioli, Juventus midfielder, one of the players involved in the latest betting scandal in Italian football.
The 22-year-old pleaded guilty as a sign of cooperation with the Italian justice system and benefited from a reduced sentence, as he will now stay out of the field for only 7 months, in addition to a 125,000 euro fine.
In the minutes of Nicolò Fagioli's statements before the prosecutors regarding the betting case, he stated that he got so badly in debt from the bets he made that those who had given him money threatened to break his legs.
"They threatened to break my legs, but I never bet on Juventus or Cremonese, the teams I played for. The situation was so unbearable that in Sassuolo, as soon as I left the field I started to cry on the bench, thinking about my problems related to betting debts", Italian media write about Fagioli's statements before the court.
As it appears from his depositions, the midfielder first began betting on tennis and often asked for debts from friends, teammates and even strangers.
When everything started to go wrong, he also started betting on football, but he never played the teams that represented Cremonese and Juventus. Even when he returned to the Whites in 2022, he had accumulated a debt of 250 thousand euros. The young man begins to sink into this moment even worse, in the hope that he would recover enough money to pay off the debts he had.
Between legal and illegal platforms, various agencies and illegal banks, he has about 3 million debts.
It was a very serious problem, given that at Juventus he earned only one million euros a year.
At this moment he starts borrowing from his teammates, like Gatti and Dragusin, without revealing the reason, but saying that he needs to buy some watches, but his account was blocked by his mother. A situation that would eventually explode, albeit by chance, when he was caught meeting a suspicious person who had been placed under surveillance by the Italian prosecutor precisely for illegal betting in May of this year.
Fagioli's gambling addiction originated during a training camp in Tirrenia with the U-21 team. Fagioli sees his friend and teammate Tonali betting on an illegal betting site. The former Milan player helps him register through an account. That's where it all starts: "I bet on the winner of a match, or the under/over score, never the scorer's name or the exact score. I did it out of boredom, the 22-year-old Juventus midfielder, who, together with Tonali and Zaniolo, is at the center of the investigation, would declare to the investigators.
