The Albanian national team is expected to have a new star in the team for the October matches. It is about Meritan Shabani, the former player of Bayern Munich and Wolverhampton.
Shabani, who currently plays for Grasshoppers in the Swiss elite football league, is said to be called up by coach Sylvinho. It is not known whether the 24-year-old will be called up for the delicate match with the Czech Republic, valid for the Euro 2024 qualifiers, or for the friendly against Bulgaria.
According to the media, Shabani will try to wear the red and black jersey for the first time in his career.
Born in Munich, Shabani grew up in Bayern Munich's academy, before embarking on an adventure at Bayern II. He made his official debut for the team on 27 October 2017 in a 1–1 home draw against FV Illertissen, a Regionalliga Bayern match.
On 28 April 2018, Shabani made his Bundesliga debut for the first team, starting 56 minutes before being replaced by Thiago Alcantara in a 4–1 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt.
On 9 May 2018, he signed his first professional contract with the club, a contract that would last until 30 June 2020.
But after a year in Bayern's second team (2019), he was transferred to Wolves U-21 for 1.5 million euros. Even in the English team, Shabani received several calls from the first team, which plays in the Premier League. But, he could not debut in the Premier League.
Meritani could not leave his mark with the English team due to a serious knee injury and went on loan to VVV Venlo in the Netherlands. After half a loan season, in the summer of 2022, Shabani moved to Grasshoppers, where he is currently active.
Internationally, Shabani has represented Germany U-20, playing in the 2018 Elite Round.
Since the 24-year-old has not played for the first team of Germany, there are no problems for him to represent Albania.
Shabani is activated as an attacking midfielder, a role currently covered by Nedim Bajrami in the red and black national team, without having an alternative to compete.
Despite the fact that Shabani's career has not been what he expected, in his early days he was considered one of the most promising talents of German football. And Sylvinho seems to have a regard for the footballer, who could return to his best days.
