The European Athletics Championships will start in Slovenia on Tuesday, but Luiza Gega will not represent Albania. The athlete, who was declared European Champion in 2022, has made a denunciation on social networks that she considers a scandal, since according to her the federation has decided to transport her by bus.

"When I saw how little seriousness was taken in this activity, I decided to withdraw because most of the delegation would go by bus. So they would have to travel 20 hours and then compete. It brought me back to 20 years ago when the last time was by bus. There's nothing wrong with going by bus, but it's very tiring. An exhausting way for an athlete to get the most out of the competition," the athlete initially said.

Gega takes direct aim at the president of the athletics federation, Izmir Smajlaj, an athlete in the long jump discipline, who took up this position on May 5 of this year. 

 "It was very disappointing because the first moment the president came he said 'the first thing is to support athletes because I was an athlete myself'. The first thing he does is set athletics back 20 years," said Gega.

For Gega, what is even more scandalous is the fact that the federation has not distributed any uniforms to the athletes, but at the same time requires them to have them ready for the European Championships.

"He hasn't bought any uniforms. The only uniforms we've had are from 2 years ago, which my coach bought out of pocket. When a president comes to power, he has to make a change, and the president has to buy out of pocket when it's not possible with the federation's funds. A president does this: he has to be ready to carry a federation on his shoulders. Not everyone can be president ," declared Gega.

Izmir Smajlaj was elected president of the athletics federation as the sole candidate, while earlier his predecessor Taulant Stërmasi, also Luiza Gegë's coach, withdrew from the race following accusations of manipulation of voting associations.

At the same time, Luiza Gega failed to be elected as a member of the leadership in the elections, as she did not receive the necessary votes.
