Fiorentina in mourning, president Rocco B. Commisso passes away

Fiorentina Club sadly announced today the death of its president, Rocco B. Commisso.

"With great sorrow, the Commisso family - wife Catherine, children Giuseppe and Marisa and sisters Italia and Raffaelina - announce the death of our beloved President, Rocco B. Commisso. After a long period of medical treatment, our President has left us and today we all mourn his departure," the post shared on social media reads.

Rocco B. Commisso, 76, was born in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica in the province of Reggio Calabria. He immigrated to the United States in 1961 with his mother and sisters to join his father, who was a woodworker.

After initially living in Pennsylvania, he later settled in New York.

He graduated with a degree in engineering from Columbia University, partly thanks to a scholarship as a football player.

After several successful business ventures, Commisso acquired a majority stake in New York Cosmos in 2017 and became the owner of Fiorentina in 2019.

In an interview given in December to La Nazione, Commisso expressed his desire to be closer to the club:

I miss Fiorentina, but I can't make long trips.

His death leaves a void in Italian football and among Fiorentina fans, who described him as a beloved and dedicated figure to the club.
