The football world is in mourning, as the former French footballer passes away

Former French footballer Thierry Steimetz has died at the age of 42 after a long battle with cancer, the Union of Professional Footballers in France (UNFP) confirmed on Sunday.

Steimetz, born in Creutzwald, spent his career in France, Luxembourg and Germany, playing in the qualifying stages of the Champions League and Europa League. He played for several well-known teams such as Lens B, Metz, and Luxembourg club F91 Dudelange.

He made nearly 200 appearances during his career, but was forced to retire from football in 2017 after having a leg amputated due to a malignant tumor. After retiring, Steimetz devoted himself to coaching and management at amateur levels in France.

The UNFP, in an official statement, described Steimetz as a respected football figure in the Lorraine and Luxembourg regions, expressing condolences to his family and relatives. The Metz club, where he played during the 2011–2012 season, also expressed condolences.

"The entire FC Metz family expresses its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones," the French club said in a statement.
