FIFA has decided to open investigations against Argentina and the Netherlands after their fiery World Cup quarter-final clash won on penalties as 120 minutes (regular time and extra time) ended 2-2.
In total, Spanish referee Lahoz issued 17 yellow cards, with the tension culminating near the end of regular time, where there was a massive brawl between members of both teams.
In a statement, FIFA's disciplinary committee confirmed it had launched an investigation into both teams after studying the referee's match report.
"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentine Football Federation for possible violations of Articles 12 (misbehavior of players and officials) and 16 (match order and security) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
In addition, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Dutch Football Association for possible violations of Article 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in the same match.
Allegations of team misconduct are routine when five yellow cards are picked up in a game. Argentina is likely to receive a heavier fine, for breach of order and security."
