The last head of Italy's delegation was the late Gianluca Vialli, who died in January 2023. Buffon wanted to remember one of the symbols of the Azzurri in recent seasons, stressing, however, that he does not want to be compared to him:

"Extraordinary and beautiful memory, we had an extraordinary relationship off the field. It would be a mistake to think of reaching his level immediately. Each of us has his own past, a path. To be able to come here, trying to re-propose Vialli, would be a mistake, I wouldn't be able to rise to the top."

For Buffon, it will be the first role not as a footballer after 25 years, in which he shone with gloves on his hands. Part of football again, but no longer as a goalkeeper. Mancini is no longer the coach of Italy, replaced by Spalletti: "In the last few days I had the good fortune to be near the president Gravina and the coach with his staff.

I heard about concepts, emotions, values ​​that are essential for me, if you want to achieve a maximum goal. Then there are opponents to consider. I have the feeling that Italy has found the right man at the right time with the new coach".
