Sneakers once worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan have sold for $2.2 million at auction, making them the most expensive shoes ever sold.

The signature sneakers, which Sotheby's had estimated would fetch $2 million to $4 million, are among the most expensive Michael Jordan items sold at auction.

A jersey he wore in the 1998 NBA Finals sold in 2022 for $10.1 million.

The latest sale seals Jordan's position as the most valuable athlete at auctions for sports memorabilia.

"Today's record result further proves that demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to be strong and to exceed all expectations," said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables.

The previous record for Jordan shoes was $1.47 million for a pair of his Nike Air Ships sold at auction in 2021.

The Air Jordan XIIIs sold on Tuesday were worn by the basketball star during his final championship season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98.
