The United States has lost or damaged at least 81 military aircraft, drones and helicopters since the start of the war with Iran, with a total cost that could reach $3.3 billion, according to a new report by the US Congressional Research Service (CRS).

Among the affected assets are some of the US military's most advanced aircraft. The list includes 12 F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets, one F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter jet, two A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, and one E-3 Sentry reconnaissance aircraft.

Three F-15Es, worth more than $30 million each, were shot down by friendly fire over Kuwait on March 2, while another was shot down over Iran the following month. Eight other F-15Es suffered minor damage during Iranian airstrikes on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on September 9 and 10. The damaged aircraft have been returned to service, the report said.

Another significant loss is related to the MQ-9 Reaper drones. At least 45 of them have been lost, each estimated to cost between $30 million and $50 million. The losses have reduced the fleet of these drones, used for surveillance and missile strikes, to 135 vehicles.

According to reported data, the US Air Force aims to have at least 189 Reaper drones ready for operation at any given time.

The CRS report also mentions the damage to a fifth-generation F-35A fighter jet, worth over $92 million, which came under Iranian fire on March 19.

Another significant loss is that of an E-3 Sentry aircraft, worth about $270 million. This reconnaissance and command aircraft, built on the basis of the Boeing 707, is considered an old but essential platform for American operations. In 2015, the US Air Force had 32 such aircraft in operation.

The US also lost an A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft in April, while another was damaged during the September attack in Jordan.

According to a list compiled by the Congressional Research Service, American assets lost or damaged during the war with Iran include 12 F-15E Strike Eagles, one F-35A Lightning II, two A-10 Warthogs, seven KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft, one E-3 Sentry, two MC-130J Commando II special operations aircraft, one HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter, one MQ-4C Triton drone, three MQ-1 drones, one AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, four AH-6 Little Bird light attack helicopters, and one MH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter.

In total, the reported losses and damages constitute a significant blow to the US air fleet, both in terms of the number of assets affected and their multi-billion dollar value.
