Efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine continue at the UN General Assembly. According to statements by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US government has now invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, which will take place in Miami in December.

Rubio justified his decision to reporters in New York by saying that if you want to solve problems, you have to meet with people you disagree with. According to him, Putin's participation in the G20 summit in Miami would be a good opportunity for him to talk not only with US President Donald Trump, but also with other heads of state and government.

Truce, right?

Rubio also expressed optimism that there could be a cessation of fighting. After a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, he said that Ukraine and Russia are interested in a limited ceasefire.

According to Rubio, both sides have signaled interest in an agreement that could include a halt to attacks on grain shipments and energy facilities. He stressed that reaching a partial agreement in this conflict is not easy, but that the effort is worth it even if it does not end the war completely.

However, Lavrov later dashed these hopes. At the UN Security Council, he again rejected any idea of a ceasefire. According to him, only Europe wants such a pause, so that during this time it can supply Ukraine with more weapons.

Lavrov stated that Moscow, as President Vladimir Putin has said, is seeking a comprehensive solution to end the conflict.

Ukraine ready for partial ceasefire

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybikha stressed in his response that Kiev is ready for an immediate and complete ceasefire, without conditions, provided that Moscow also respects it.

He added that Ukraine is also ready for partial ceasefires, which would include a halt to attacks on energy facilities or grain exports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his speech to the UN General Assembly, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of not wanting peace.

The US has long been trying to bring an end to the war of Russian aggression, which has been going on for more than four and a half years. However, so far the rounds of talks have not brought any decisive progress./ DW
