Prime Minister Edi Rama is in Brussels today participating in the Tourism Summit organized by EuroNews. In the discussions, the head of government highlighted Albania's growth in the tourism sector and the high interest of visitors in Albanian nature.
The Prime Minister also spoke with figures about the increase in the number of tourists visiting Albania from year to year, not only Europeans, but also from other continents.
"Our goal is the world. We are working, but what I have learned from this whole battle, to change the name you have to change yourself. One of the safest places in Europe. The quality of the sun is much higher than in Brussels. We have delicious food, hospitable people and in a small space, seas, rivers, wonderful mountains. There is so much variety, that within 1 week you can experience so many things. We are very happy to see so many tourists arriving.
We are discovering that all parts of the world are participating in the growth. When we started this transformative journey, we counted 2 million tourists and this figure also included the officials who did the counting, because for every official who entered and left, it was noted or was part of this figure. My predecessor was a tourist when he returned to Albania. Last year we ended up with nearly 12 million foreigners, not only Europeans, Japanese, Latin Americans, Australians, Chinese, Israelis, from the Middle East", said Rama.
The Prime Minister also spoke about investments, pointing to the construction of new airports from the north to the south of Albania, for which there is still work to be done to make them functional.
"We do not have the best infrastructure in Europe. We have an airport that for the 5th consecutive year is the fastest growing in Europe. We have left our neighbors for the 6th year in absolute numbers. Now we will open a new airport in Vlora, we are working on a third airport in the south, which will be seasonal, while a 4th is in the mountainous area, but it is not functioning as we wanted. We will also have an airport for flamingos.
"Albania is the land of eagles. If eagles can fly safely, so can people. In Albania we have an impressive airport that operates around the clock. On one day in August, it reached 329 flights within 24 hours ," Rama said.
Rama on Sazani and Zvërnec: We are bringing the largest investment in Europe
Rama said that the country is attracting well-known hotel brands and large investments, aiming for high-level tourism.
He mentioned the Atlantis project and the possible investment of up to 6 billion euros in the area between Sazan and Zvërnec.
"We need to address the country's need for a good life, high wages, better services, a better preserved nature. We do this with income. This income comes from investment and the creation of new resources. We have not yet decided to build an atomic bomb, but simple things. Therefore, we need to take care of the potential. It is an ideology when you say either development or conservation. I say that these can converse and function side by side, being able to get the best out of them.
The fact that we have protests is very good. When the protests were in their early stages, it was clear that Albanians had to convey the message. We were with protesters in private conversations, because they were sending me messages, I saw people there who were our voters. We came out of this with a new reflection on what was there for us. Among other things, we came out with the intelligent mirror and in a few days we will pass here and this will start by displaying all the documents, the processes of every truth about this project. This mirror will serve the demands that citizens have for the government", said Rama.
Asked by the moderator why he should invest in a situation that could lead to negative perception, Rama said:
"No one else is Donald Trump's son-in-law. So no one else risks being under the spotlight of leftists, Democrats, journalists, liberals, etc., etc., who are eager to find a reason to fight Trump, in Europe, America, Earth or the Moon."
According to him, the interest in investing in Albania is not related to politics or Donald Trump, but to the opportunities the country offers for large investments.
"The real reason why they came is not political, it is not related to Trump, but to the fact that Trump's son-in-law, together with a large company from Qatar, found it very attractive to invest in Albania. The conversation started when it was not yet clear whether Trump would go to the White House or to prison ," the prime minister declared.
