The EU Delegation in Tirana has reacted to the attacks by protesters that also affected government buildings and private businesses. The statement condemns the escalation of violence and calls for restraint.

"Violence has no place in democracy," the statement says, while demanding that the right to assemble be respected and concerns be addressed through dialogue.

Full reaction:

We strongly condemn the escalation of violence during the protest and the destruction of public and private property.

We call on protesters to show restraint and avoid any acts of violence.

Violence has no place in democracy.

Freedom of assembly and expression are fundamental rights and core European values. They must be respected and exercised peacefully.

Constructive dialogue between all parties is the only way forward to address legitimate concerns.
In the violent protest the day before, protesters also burned the College of Europe building at the Pyramid.
