A Greek police operation led to the seizure of a significant amount of drugs yesterday.

Information about a shipment of narcotics that was to be brought into Greece was provided by the Patras anti-drugs unit.

Anti-drug agents followed the suspect vehicle as it entered Igoumenitsa and observed it from a distance as it was loaded with drugs at the green Albanian-Greek border.

The narcotics, which are suspected of having come from Saranda, were transported by air across the green border and entered Greek territory, with the aim of being loaded into the vehicle that was spotted by the police.

After the vehicle was loaded, it was stopped by police on the "Egnatia" road, near Tiria, on the Igoumenitsa-Ioannina axis.

The police have arrested the driver of the vehicle, a Greek citizen, and have seized 63 packages containing 70 kg and 80 grams of marijuana.
Recently, a reactivation of international drug trafficking from Albania to Greece has been noticed.

Over the past 14 months, Greek police have seized around 1.3 tonnes of marijuana in Igoumenitsa, Ioannina, Kostur, Follorina and Thessaloniki.
The largest number of cases have been recorded in the traffic from Saranda to Igoumenitsa, where almost half of the quantity seized in the Greek areas is suspected to have been trafficked through this route. In one case in Igoumenitsa, a speedboat loaded with drugs was even seized.
