Socialist MP Erion Braçe brought to the Assembly a series of concrete examples from the annual report of the Supreme State Audit Office for 2024, denouncing the abusive and clientelistic behavior of some officials in the Customs and Taxation Directorates.

In his speech, Braçe mentioned an unusual case during a tax audit on the outskirts of Tirana, where a small business was fined 8.2 million old lekë for 15 kilograms of cottage cheese found without a tax invoice.

"At the time of the inspection, it turns out that there was no invoice for cottage cheese priced at 229 lek per kilogram. And the fine is 822 thousand new lek. For 15 kilos of cottage cheese! This is abuse,"  said Braçe, reading the official report document from the Parliament's rostrum.

According to him, the SAI report has revealed significant problems in public procurement, clientelism in Customs, as well as delays in collecting tax debts. The MP emphasized that tax officials often go beyond any control system, avoiding cameras or GPS during inspections.

"The SAI has done a good job, because it highlights cases where fiscal authorities behave cruelly towards the weak and pretend not to see when it comes to the big ones,"  he added.

Brace also responded to the opposition's accusations that "900 million euros have been stolen in nine months", describing these statements as "pathological lies".

"The SAI is an institution that works on the basis of facts, not rumors. There is no such figure in the report. To say that 900 million euros were stolen in one year is a deliberate misrepresentation or deception,"  said Braçe.

The MP emphasized that all cases identified by the SAI have been forwarded for investigation to SPAK, while he requested that the institution's reports be used to build a fairer and more transparent administration, and not for political purposes.
