"Albanians and Serbs have not had good relations for centuries"
Viktor Ula

Viktor Ula was born in New York of the United States, originally from the Highlands of Gjakova. He has a publishing house, "Alerion", which published the book "Serbs and Albanians" by Croatian albanologist Milan Shuflaj. Mr. Ula, who has translated the book into English, tells Voice of America that this book is one of the most important for the history of the Albanian nation.

"This book was published in 1925 in Belgrade in old Croatian, it has been translated several times in Tirana and Pristina, but the English world has not had the opportunity to become familiar with our history, the history of the Albanian people from the seventh century to the 15th century. it means a time that was very important for the formation of the Albanian identity, it means when the word Alban began to be used. Before that, we all know that we are descendants of the Illyrians," he said.

Mr. Ula says that Milan Shuflaj was the most important albanologist with his works about the history of Albanians.

"He worked in the archives of Europe and from those archives that were in the old Greek language, the old Latin language, he pulled the data about our people and his contribution is not only in this book, he also did other actions that unfortunately it came to his murder, at that time in 1931 by the Serbs, they killed him because he was revealing our Albanian identity and it did not suit the Serbs that, for example, a man works to inform the world, especially Europe at that time, when it was the idea of who we Albanians are", he said.

Mr. Ula says that relations between Albanians and Serbs in most cases for centuries have not been good.

"We have not agreed with the Serbs many times, several times we have agreed on cooperation in terms of history, but in general it has been a kind of conflict because the Serbs have always had that goal and whoever reads this book sees the goal of usurping the Albanian lands and territories to the coast, for example, it can be seen in the book that the Serbs are trying not only to Shkodra as we know it, but to Vlora, they are trying to impose themselves and eradicate the Albanian people, and you can see that that conflict is currently happening even today, it continues and we know that this it was also the conflict of the Kosovo war", he said.

He says that the bad relations between Albanians and Serbs to this day are a consequence of Serbian politics.

"I believe that in one way we are more ready to find a solution than the Serbs, and unfortunately they still have the politicians who served (Slobodan) Milosevic. It is absurd that (Aleksandër) Vucic is currently the same person who was the minister of information in Milosevic, it is absurd that I can change his policy", said Mr. Ula.

Mr. Ula said that Albanians over the centuries have lost the opportunity to show their identity to European countries, and this, according to him, has led to the prejudices they face even today.

"Because Europe has a concept that we are not Europe. Geographically, we are in Europe, but with mind, culture and idea we are not Europe, we are from the East and this is not true. Here I think it's a problem because we don't know how to do marketing to show who we are, our identity and this book and others help us identify with Europe and relate our 1 thousand year history at the time when Europe is starting to form its identity. We are not only part of Europe but we are really the essence of Europe at that time. We existed between Rome and Greece, there is no other way out, the Albanian people were an old people of Europe and at that time until the time of Gjergj Kastrioti we were equal in economic, social and cultural development with Europe. France, Germany,

He says that the new generations have already started working more with the presentation of the Albanian identity around the world. He says that Kosovo must continue to work hard to fulfill its economic and social goals that would enable it to progress towards western countries.

"Okay, every time I come to Kosovo I feel good, otherwise I am the son-in-law of Gjakova, Kosovo is in my heart", he said./ VOA
