The case of Fredi Beleri ended “in an extraordinary way” for the MEP, said Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. This statement provoked the reaction of journalist Alexis Papahelas, who stressed that he does not find the matter funny at all.

“In Albania, 58% of prisoners have not yet been brought to trial,” the Albanian prime minister explained, saying it was “unfortunate” that Mr. Beleri had to remain in prison. However, it was clear that the discussion about Beleri was irritating him.

The controversial reference to Plato could not be missing from the discussion between the Albanian Prime Minister and the director of "Kathimerini" at the 11th Delphi Economic Forum.

Referring to the confusion and reactions caused by a statement he made in January, when he told a Greek-American journalist that he was not a descendant of Plato and Aristotle, Edi Rama admitted that he had made a bad joke and apologized for the statement.

"We take ourselves very seriously"

In response to Alexis Papachelas’ comment that he seemed hostile about that interview, Rama replied: “I have great admiration for this country,” – stressing that he in no way wanted to diminish the beauty of Greek culture. “The only problem I have with Greeks and Albanians is that we take ourselves too seriously,” he said, declaring himself “in love with Greece.”

Regarding the Greek minority, he said that it is an important advantage for Albania, just as the Albanian minority is for Greece. "We owe it to both of them to have a very friendly relationship," he emphasized.

"Let the problem with the Exclusive Economic Zone end this year"

Regarding the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), Rama stressed that there is now an agreement with the Greek government on their definition, which will be decided by the Hague Court.

"The Beleri issue created some difficulties, of course we lost time, but what characterizes my relationship with Kyriakos is respect," he noted.

“Our ambition,” he added, “is to conclude the EEZ issue this year, before the end of the year.” He also stated that he was happy that Albania is discussing energy issues with Greece, stressing that he does not believe there are serious problems between the two countries.

"We perceive the Greek minority as a cultural treasure"

Regarding the issue of the properties of the Greek ethnic minority in Albania, Mr. Rama argued that it is an issue that affects all Albanian citizens due to the complexity of legalizing property in the country. It is an issue that Mr. Mitsotakis has been “obsessive” about, Mr. Rama argued, praising the Greek prime minister for his efforts.

“We need to do more to show our neighbors how much we value this relationship,” he said. “We perceive the Greek minority as a cultural treasure and we respect them because they are citizens of our country,” he stressed.

"We have never been closer to the European Union"

During the discussion, the Albanian Prime Minister said that he accepted the Italian government's request for reception centers for migrants in Albania. He also said that Albania now has an independent judicial system, economic development and more tourism. According to him, the Western Balkans in general is going through the best period it has ever experienced.

"We have never been closer to the European Union, the EU has never recognized our importance in geopolitical planning so much, we have never cooperated with each other like now," he explained.

"Trump? He's busy, I think."

Recently, he said it was a privilege to attend the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s “Peace Council,” even though the US president has left Mr. Rama’s request to drop war crimes charges against the Kosovo Liberation Army unanswered. “He’s busy, I think,” he said with a laugh.
