MEP Fredi Beleri, during an interview with Euronews Albania, spoke about Prime Minister Rama's stance during the Delphi Economic Forum, which mentioned the Fredi Beleri issue.

Rama said that a mayor would dream of getting out of prison and becoming an MEP, but today they continue to be in prison, referring to the Veliaj case. The Prime Minister acknowledged that the Beleri case affected the relationship between the two countries.

Fredi Beleri himself has called the fact that Rama compares him to Veliaj a second injustice, since according to him, Veliaj is accused of hundreds of thousands of euros, while Beleri's alleged criminal offense was 360 euros. For those 360 ??euros, he spent 16 months in prison.

"The fact that today I have the luxury of being a deputy and have the honor of being voted for by 250,000 Greek citizens does not make me forget the injustice that Mr. Rama has done to me. I have never forgotten the 4,000 voters of Himara, whose vote was not respected in Albania. It was precisely those 4,000 votes that brought 250,000 votes of Greek citizens and today made me a parliamentarian. I believe that Mr. Rama is doing a second injustice by comparing me to mayors of the Socialist Party like Mr. Veliaj.

"Whilst I do not wish to comment on Mr. Veliaj's guilt or innocence, I would like to tell Mr. Rama that Mr. Veliaj is accused of hundreds of thousands of euros, while my alleged criminal offense was 360 euros. For those 360 ??euros, I spent 16 months in prison. So, ignoring this issue is not so easy for me, who suffered. Mr. Rama should know that in the European Union, where Albania aims to join, respecting the people's vote is non-negotiable," said Fredi Beleri.

Fredi iBeleri focused on justice reform, stating that people are being held unjustly in prison. He called Rama's narrative hypocrisy then and now, as it is not clear who is in charge of justice.

"Many times in interviews he has come out and said that the creator and the one who carried out the justice reform is Mr. Rama. But do we have a good justice reform or a reform that keeps people unjustly in prison? I feel proud that all my arguments when I was in prison, today Mr. Rama uses them. I believe that even then he was a hypocrite, and he is still a hypocrite. Mr. Rama's rhetoric towards me was that justice is independent. Today, the judges are to blame. Even then it was out of place, and it is out of place today. The intervention of the executive branch in the judiciary cannot happen in a democratic country.

Mr. Rama is used to holding these positions and not being punished by the Albanian people, so he continues to do so. I believe that his softening has to do with the fact that Rama and his government are at their worst moment in these 13 years. It has to do with integration, with the current issue in Albania, with poverty, with reforms that are not advancing, with the rule of law that is going from bad to worse. There is not one aspect where Albania has progressed.

Of course, I believe that I should not have spent a single day in prison, just like many Albanians who are in prison today. We are the only country where 60% of prisoners are in pre-trial detention. This is not democracy. These people are not in prison by chance, but Mr. Rama's judiciary keeps them with one purpose: to intimidate and manipulate them for elections. Mr. Rama did not go on television and threaten Albanians. You do not pay the electricity, you go to prison. You build without a permit, you go to prison. But if you build towers, you are a friend of the government," Beleri said.

"There is a saying: when a lion is your neighbor, there is always a chance that the lion will eat you. Now the lion is Mr. Rama. He is victimized and today he completely controls power," said Beleri.
