Democratic Party MPs and exponents reacted this Saturday regarding the referendum process for the re-confidence vote of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, describing it as a unifying process and support for the current party leadership.
Despite the lack of competition in this process and the disqualification of five candidates who intended to enter the race, most democratic figures avoided criticizing Berisha, while some of them chose to publicly evaluate his political figure.
MP Jorida Tabaku briefly stated that the situation "needs no comment", comparing the process to developments in other political parties.
"It's called a referendum, that's the situation, compare it with the other party, I don't believe there's any need for any comment here," she declared.
Meanwhile, MP Jozefina Topalli described Berisha as a symbolic figure in Albanian politics, emphasizing that he has managed to make a political comeback despite attacks and isolation.
"In the end, politics is a test of character. There are leaders who are powerful in power because of power. It is very rare for those who fall to their knees when everything is taken away from them. In the case of Berisha, he was attacked in an unprecedented way, he was lobbied to be declared non grata, he had planetary isolation and he managed to return through the trust of the people," said Topalli.
The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Agron Gjekmarkaj, also commented on the lack of competition, stating that the Democrats are subject to "referendum laws."
"If there was a competition, we would have a competition. Without a competition, we are subject to the referendum laws," he said.
MP Ledina Alolli considered the process one of the most important for the Democratic Party and an expression of support for Berisha and the opposition.
Meanwhile, MP Tritan Shehu conveyed congratulations to Berisha and the DP, stating that the opposition expects "new efforts in confronting the regime."
There was also a reaction from MP Luciano Boçi, who said that the voter turnout was high and described the referendum as a democratic and unifying process for the party.
"The DP does not have the luxury of entering into debates, divisions, and discord, which we have long experienced and want to leave behind. Unifying processes are the best and healthiest for internal democracy," declared Boçi from the blue headquarters.
According to him, the process has been open and democratic, while emphasizing that the result represents "the will of the democrats."
