The Democratic Party has officially announced that it will not participate in the plenary session at 3:00 PM, where the $302 million loan agreement with the United States of America in the field of defense is expected to be voted on.

The head of the DP parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, stated that the opposition is in principle in favor of the agreement, but opposes the method followed by the majority for its approval through an accelerated procedure, without giving the deputies the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the content of the document.

According to Bardhi, the practice established by the Speaker of the Assembly, where MPs must become familiar with the text of the agreement only through a group reading within the premises of the Assembly, is contrary to the constitutional status of MPs.

"The practice established by the Speaker of the Assembly, according to which MPs must familiarize themselves with the text of the agreement through a group reading, within the premises of the Assembly, is humiliating and contradicts the constitutional status of the MP. The Assembly has the obligation to make all parliamentary documentation available to MPs," the Democratic Party statement reads.

The DP emphasizes that if the agreement is classified and confidentiality is required, MPs can commit through a written declaration not to make its contents public.

"However, the parliamentary majority refuses to follow this practice, asking the Assembly to vote on an agreement with content unknown to the deputies and without giving them the opportunity to review it," the statement continues.

The Democratic Party has reiterated that it supports the agreement with the US to increase defense investments and fulfill Albania's obligations to NATO, but demands that the vote take place after a full review of the document.

"For these reasons, we declare that we will not participate in a plenary session called in violation of the Constitution," Bardhi's statement concludes.
