Freedom Party President Ilir Meta has been guaranteed the right to give interviews to journalists from his prison cell.

The decision was made after the intervention of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, which emphasizes that it is Meta's right to communicate and give interviews to journalists. A fundamental right that, according to the AHC, prevails over any other unjustified restriction.

Through a status on social networks, PL Secretary General Tedi Blushi emphasized that Meta's interviews will be guaranteed through information technology tools from digital platforms such as Zoom.

“We thank the Albanian Helsinki Committee for the findings and conclusions published in the second report of the monitoring mission on the conditions of detention of the President of the Freedom Party, Mr. Ilir Meta, especially with regard to guaranteeing his right to communicate with the media.

On behalf of the Freedom Party and President Meta, we welcome the position of the Albanian Helsinki Committee on the necessity of respecting Mr. Meta's right to communicate and give interviews to journalists, a fundamental right that prevails over any other unjustified restriction.

We fully appreciate and support the suggestion of the Albanian Helsinki Committee that, in order to guarantee in a proportionate manner both Mr. Meta's right to communication and security at the "Jordan Misja" Penitentiary Institution, information technology tools be used to conduct interviews with the media through digital platforms such as Zoom. Such a solution would ensure the full exercise of the right to communicate with the media without compromising security on the premises of the institution.

Thanking all journalists who have received authorization from SPAK to conduct interviews with President Meta, but who have so far been prevented by the General Directorate of Prisons, we would like to reiterate that, except for tomorrow when the DP Congress takes place, Mr. Meta remains open to any questions and ready to give interviews through digital platforms.

We invite all journalists who have received permission from SPAK, in accordance with the recommendations of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, to request from the General Directorate of Prisons the possibility of conducting interviews with Mr. Meta through digital means.

"Freedom of speech and the right to information are non-negotiable in a democratic society," Blushi wrote on social media.
