Mitsotakis hopes for the Appeal for Beleri: It has negatively affected
Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis still hopes for the "reflection of the Albanian authorities" to allow Himara's elected mayor to be sworn in. In an interview for SKAI television, Mitsotakis said that the way Albania handled this issue had a negative impact on Greek-Albanian relations.

"We have continuously talked about the Beleri case. We have expressed our strong reservations, not least because Fred Beller was not given the opportunity to be sworn in while in custody. There is still no final decision, there is only a decision of the court of first instance. We will continue to push for a fair trial. I am sorry to say, it is known that the way Albania handled this issue has had a bad effect on Greek-Albanian relations", Mitsotakis.

Yannis Dsounos: Negatively?

Kyriakos Mitsotakis : Yes, negatively. It's not something we wanted. And I still hope, that this issue can be resolved.

Greece still maintains its veto within the EU for not allowing the initiation of the review of the membership chapters with Albania.

The Greek television SKAI has also published the fact that the name of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, whose imprisonment brought the relations with Albania to the breaking point, may be Mitsotakis' candidate for MEP in the June European elections.

Supporters of this scenario believe that a possible run by Beleri will give significant points in the electorate to the Greek government, fueling the feeling of the vast majority of Greek citizens who consider his imprisonment unjust.

The reference point for any development will be the decision of the Special Court of Appeal on Tuesday next week after the first instance sentenced Beler to two years in prison.
