Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has again boycotted Prime Minister Rama, and this is clearly shown by his recent move, which openly shows a rift in relations between Tirana and Ankara. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu began official visits to Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo on June 15th. The Turkish Minister will have bilateral meetings and will also meet with representatives of Turkish communities in northern Macedonia. But in these meetings throughout the Balkans, it seems that Albania is not on the agenda of the Turkish Foreign Minister.
According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the visits will address bilateral issues, current regional and international developments with a focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mevlut Cavusoglu will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts, heads of state and government, as well as speakers of parliaments, and will meet with representatives of Turkish communities in those countries. Cavusoglu also attended the Second Prespa Dialogue Forum in Northern Macedonia in Ohrid yesterday and delivered a speech at the Official High Level Opening Session, writes SOT .
What happened between Erdogan and Rama?
This change of course from Erdogan to Edi Rama surprises you, as in recent years the Prime Minister has proven that he has good relations with the Turkish president, while the latter has stayed close to Albania in difficult days such as the earthquake in 2019 and the pandemic of Covid-19, where Erdogan financed to build apartments and hospitals for our country. But beyond generosity and support, President Erdogan in return urged Prime Minister Rama to take concrete steps to fight the Gulenists. According to him, this was a "precondition" for friendship and partnership between the two countries, a message he left to Rama during his visit to Tirana on January 17 this year.
Rama's change is suspected to have come after the Americans' stance on the Gulenists. The US Deputy Ambassador to Albania, Demian Smith, visited a few weeks ago the students of the "Turgut Ozal" school, the educational institution, which Erdogan has requested year after year to be closed, as they are funded by Gülen. Since 2016, Albania has made small concessions, such as allowing the replacement of Gulenist-funded educational institutions by a Turkish state foundation.
