Eric Wendt, US President Donald Trump's nominee for the position of US ambassador to Albania, reported this Wednesday to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he presented his priorities if confirmed in office.

During his speech, Wendt emphasized his long military and diplomatic experience in the service of the United States, recalling that he has led important operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

He praised the cooperation with Albanian troops within NATO, describing them as forces with a "fighting spirit."

According to him, Albanians are a proud, hardworking and hospitable people.

“I served the US as a military officer. At the State Department, I led a coalition as a coordinator for Israel and Palestine. In that position, I operated every day at the US Embassy in Jerusalem, reporting directly to the Secretary of State. Meanwhile, I left my uniform and retired. I continued at the Marine Academy in California. As NATO Special Operations Command, Albanian troops were part of my command and I worked with them on the ground. In Afghanistan, I was deputy commander and regional commander, where Albanian special forces were involved. Albanian troops have a fighting spirit. The Albanian people are also very proud, hardworking and very hospitable people.”

Wendt stated that the top priority will be protecting American citizens and strengthening US interests in Albania. He warned of a stronger commitment to the fight against corruption and organized crime, especially trafficking linked to Latin American cartels.

The American diplomat said he aims to increase security cooperation between the two countries, including in the cyber field.

“If confirmed, my top priorities will be protecting American citizens and advancing American interests. If confirmed in that position, there will be four lines of action on our path forward to further develop the Embassy's path in this country, and the first thing is that I will look for ways to make Americans safer and by supporting Albania, to continue their path against corruption, crime related to trafficking, and Latin American cartels. We will help make Albania and America safer.”

Another of his objectives will be to support Albania within NATO and increase defense spending by up to 5% by 2035. Wendt also focused on economic development, mentioning the energy, mining and American investment sectors in Albania.

He emphasized that American investors should face fewer legal obstacles in Albania. In conclusion, Wendt stated that the focus of his mandate will remain the security and well-being of the citizens of both countries.

"There will also be benefits to security in Albania. I will work wholeheartedly to make Albania progress towards the NATO summit. I will increase defense spending by up to 5% by 2035. Cybersecurity will increase in both countries. Third, we will focus on making America more developed. In this case, Albania will also benefit in energy, mining and various sectors of the economy. American investors should have fewer legal issues and fourth, we will focus on the main issues, which is security and people."

He further added that Porto Romano will also serve the benefits of NATO, while also supporting the work of SPAK in the fight against crime and corruption.

"Porto Romano is one of the key points, which will be a safe place. Which will be a military part for the benefit of NATO and American forces. If I go to the field, I believe very much! I will make sure that it fulfills NATO's goals. I believe that SPAK has been very effective and I can't wait to understand what happened and what happens. I will support SPAK in the fight against crime."
