Beler's sentence, Athens reacts: Concerned about the objectivity of the
Beleri and the building of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Foreign Ministry of Greece reacted after Fredi Beleri was sentenced to two years in prison by the Special Court.

The Greek Foreign Ministry says that today's decision creates concern for the objectivity of the judicial process against Beleri.

"Today's sentence by an Albanian court against the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, increases concerns about the objectivity of the process. And this is due to the dilution of the presumption of innocence due to extrinsic statements defending the sentence and because the final sentence is clearly disproportionate to the alleged crime. The no-prison sentence prevents the elected mayor from taking office, and the losing candidate remains in charge, despite a court ruling a few months ago ordering his immediate dismissal. The selective application of court decisions is not in accordance with the principles of the rule of law. The Greek government will closely monitor this case and expects a fair and objective judgment in the appeal", says the reaction of the Greek Foreign Ministry.

Fredi Beleri was sentenced today by GJKKO to two years in prison for corruption in the local elections of May 14, 2023.

Beleri won the elections for the Municipality of Himara, but did not take the oath because he is in custody. This issue has also caused diplomatic tensions between Albania and Greece.
