The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said this evening that he apologizes to the EU Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, if he considers his statements an insult, but stressed that this was not his intention.

Berisha said that he used the statements that Gonzato himself made about himself and does not consider this as an insult.

"The simplest thing for me is to apologize. But if Ambassador Gonzato, in a statement made public by himself that I was married and I have a 31-year-old son and now I live with a partner or I am married to a man and this statement was used by me, absolutely without any intention of insult. I am the author of a law that has definitively put an end to any form of discrimination. I said here that he himself was binary and then changed his mind. I had not done any investigation into his life. Nor do I deal with the life of any person. I heard him, he said it himself and he made this statement. How this is an insult, I do not understand. I used a statement, something that I said myself. If he considers this an insult then I will certainly reconsider my position, I apologize to him, I have no hesitation, but this was not an insult. This does not constitute an insult", said Berisha.

Earlier, Commissioner Kos stated that such attacks are unacceptable.

"Gender equality and non-discrimination are an integral part of EU law. Compliance with it is part of the EU accession process. This is not a private request of the EU Ambassador to Albania. Any attack on it is unacceptable ," wrote Marta Kos.

Sharing Commissioner Marta Kos's post, Prime Minister Edi Rama also reacted. He stated that the law has been greatly misinterpreted by some parties. He said that the law on gender equality is fully in line with the principles of the European Union. Rama apologized for the way the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Gonzato, was used.

Berisha said this morning that the European Union ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, has requested a vote on the draft law on gender equality. Berisha added that "Gonzato cannot impose his personal beliefs on Albanian society."
