Lulzim Basha in Athens

He held a meeting today with Albanians in Greece where he spoke, among other things, about the importance of abolishing visas with the European Union and said that he personally has played an important role.

Further, Basha made another big promise when he said that he would manage to abolish visas for Albanians with the US and Great Britain.

Excerpt from Basha's speech:

It is a fact and I know when I was Foreign Minister how many heartbreaking cases I had every day, of mothers who wanted to go see their children who they had not seen for 20 years, because they could not get a visa. Of children who had a problem to solve with their parent but could not get a visa. These are problems that have been forgotten, thank God, but they are problems that the feeling of pain that those families experienced, your families, our families, can never be erased from the mind.

So this was an extraordinary strength and motivation that pushed me to dedicate myself with all my might to a process that is today taken for granted but which was very difficult. Even for Edi Rama at that time, it was impossible. Do you remember how he told people "why would Luli lift their visas?" Well, when you start with a commitment that is not simply political but spiritual, when you feel the pain of your fellow citizen in your soul and when you do everything to achieve something completely possible, you succeed and we managed to lift visas for the European Union and give Albanians the opportunity to travel visa-free in the Schengen area.

There was a time when we were side by side with Croatia in NATO membership. And today we are at the same table as the Hellenic Republic, like Greece in the most powerful military and values-based alliance in the world in NATO. And let us say it here from Athens, let us remind the Prime Minister that the table where I have seated Albania is the only table where he sits to this day with Euro-Atlantic partners. This is another proof that when you have a government and a Prime Minister who prioritize the interests of the people, nothing is unattainable. And today from Athens, since we mentioned the example of Croatia, which has now become a member of the European Union and visas with the US have been lifted, I want to reiterate my commitment that just as we worked and lifted visas with the European Union, we will lift visas for Albanians with the US and Great Britain.
